How to Fail on the Internet - A Place to Work.

So – you want to work at home? Wander to your “office” in your pyjamas and forgo the pleasures of commuting?
You can keep you finger on the pulse of home based activities. When the gas man calls – hey – you are in! When friends pop round you have time to entertain them...so much nicer than putting up with the office wit and the pointless chit chat of office life which can be easily curtailed because you are “at work”.
It’s essential that you chose the nicest room in the house, and an interesting view is mandatory. Choose a view with lots to look at – a busy road, your neighbour’s garden (if anything ever happens there) or a soul relaxing view of mountains or the sea are great choices. Maximum distraction will help you find other things to occupy your mind instead of boring old work.
You can observe the sun moving across the sky, delight in the antics of the cheeky birds, plan your garden and any number of other time consuming activities - if you have the right view. You could even a write list of jobs that require your attention, and plan when to do them, in what order and how long you will need to complete the task.
Of course, you must have plenty of space to fill with files, papers, pencils, pens, rubbers, staples, books and assorted office materials you need for efficient working. The more casual you can make them look the better. A bit of mess around you will let you lose things more easily, and encourage you by reminding you of all the work you have started but not finished. There is nothing like failure to remind you that it is unlikely you can ever succeed.
If, like me, you live where the sun shines directly into your “office”, then there may be times when you are unable to see the computer screen. Do not worry, we must take advantage of the sun while it is there – you never know what tomorrow may bring. So, leave the curtain open and revel in the sunshine. (Sunglasses and sunhat may help here)
This is the time to take a break, or, if you still really want to work, take your computer into the conservatory. It will be so hot there that you will soon lose any will you had to work – or, indeed to anything other that lie back and toast in the scorching sun...
And then there is the garden. Now, it may take a while to set up your office in the garden so here is a check list to help you get settled:
- Set up the table and ensure the legs are not wobbly.
- Unravel the flex for your computer.
- Set up a screen to shade your computer – I use a fireguard with an old black mac draped over it.
- Find your phone – I found mine in the airing cupboard today.
- Check that you have sunscreen, sunhat and sunglasses handy. Hint: You may need to set up a second table for this.
- Place a box of pens, paper and a glass of water on your desk.
- Rescue the paper if it blows away and find a paper weight.
- Leave a message on your door so any callers know where to find you.
Now, as I mentioned this may take a little time, but situated carefully where you can see what is going on in the garden, this can be worthwhile. You can watch the birds, count the weeds and chase off the neighbour’s ill bred cat (or stroke it if you prefer).
One thing to watch for is the passage of the sun across the sky – you may need to move several times to stay in the sun or in the shade.
So, as you can see, working from home is wonderful. Your stress levels are usually low – but you work output is also likely to be somewhat low.
