How to Fail on the Internet - Your Web Page

This is where you might get stuck for far too long, although recently it has become easier to design you own web page all by yourself!

At first, you are likely to have no idea how to do this. All you know is that web designers are far too expensive – and – anyway, it looks like fun – and you want to remain in control and able to change things on your web page immediately. If you’ve accidentally put the wrong a price on, or you’ve made too many spelling errors, you don’t want to be waiting a week or so to get it corrected – and pay a price as well.

So, you decide to do it yourself.

First you might decide to go on a local web design course. That may be held at your local primary school, and will be nice. These simple beginners courses are not designed to enable you to put up links to PayPal or any other money gathering tools – but you will learn the rudiments of putting up a pretty site – and you will feel you are making progress. This leads to making your own sites for a variety of family and fun things – no use for internet marketing, but at least it gets you used to pressing a few keys on your keyboard.

Next, you will buy a course on the Internet. This will eventually tell you how to set up the links and things you need to sell stuff. But you will now have spent several weeks and some money before you even start making your site.

Then you decide enough is enough – and jump in the deep end. You may see and advert for a site that you can set up in less than an hour – so you buy this – then you realise that you don’t understand FTP, so another couple of day go by while you try to sort that out. And then, horror or horrors you find that this site requires you to write in HTTP – so you get a course on learning that – another 14 days go by.

At last you are ready to go. It’s important to have as many pictures and pop ups and cartoon characters moving across the screen as you can. It’s true they may take your potential customer a while to download the page – but it looks cool so must be worth the wait – mustn’t it? A bright colourful background is also funky; make your site stand out!

Make your site different from all those other dull sites which the so called gurus have. They look so dull! Black on white – how boring!

Meanwhile, you find that you could have done this much more cheaply with Xyz Company – and there are some really cheap domains going – it’s true they are not “com” or even “co.uk”, but that doesn’t matter as they are so inexpensive. So you change. Now you feel you really are making progress!

You have a web site, with pop ups and lots of interesting geeky things on your site – and you have spent ages writing the copy for it – you even understand how to work FTP (but not front page or word press).

And assuming you have paid for Google ads (see later article on how to do this in a really expensive way) and people are clicking on your advert – and therefore costing you money – you may now be wondering why no one is buying your product or service. Any guesses?

Unless you are a bit of a computer nerd, making your web page is where you can really have a lot of fun and spend an enormous amount of time. Going on local courses may not tell you what you need to know for internet marketing – but it’s all good fun and gives you a chance to use someone else’s computer for a nice change.
