How to Open a Massage Business

by Tomer Harel
Key Scouts

Now that you have your certificate to be a masseur, a man who performs massages, or a masseuse, a woman who performs massages, you are ready to open a business. There are some basic things to remember when opening any business, of course. However, this type of business will flourish best if you follow some basic concepts.

First of all, it's important to have your business license before beginning your practice. You will need to review the regulations in your part of the country and fill out the required forms. Many of these forms will probably be available online. You will need to find a good location to set up your practice. Look for a location that is easily located and seen by the public. A background check, zoning referral, fingerprints and other important documents may be needed.

Advertising is another important aspect of your new clinic's success. It's important to remember that while people have varying ideas about advertising, the main key is to let people know about your new business. In the early stages of your business, it's especially important for people to learn all they can about your business - what you offer, how to reach you, where you are located, etc.. Plan to spend as much as you can on advertising, within reason. In order to get the word out as quickly and least expensively as possible, be sure and hire an advertising agent who is efficient and effective.

Once you have permission to open your business, you can start looking for the furniture and equipment you will need. You will need an adjustable massage table, warm lights and other important items. Atmosphere is probably the most important ingredient to a good massage clinic. It's important for your clients to be able to relax and enjoy their massage. Soft music playing in the background, a heater in the winter to keep the room toasty warm, and of course, a convenient place to change their clothes - these are some of the key elements that can be a part of your new massage room.

Finally, your main objective is to build a clientele that schedules regular visits with you. Be ready to distribute an attractive business card to every customer. Be sure and get lots of feedback from your customers each time such as how they felt after their last visit, what you might be able to do differently to help them and any particular areas that are particularly tense or sore. It's important to communicate with your customers on a regular basis as this type of business usually grows through word of mouth.

It will require patience, hard work and perseverance to get your new business up and running. Your business will grow, however, as you begin to make contacts. You may experience ups and downs, but through it all, you will eventually be able to enjoy a business that will be both successful and profitable.

Be sure and invest in some quality ergonomic office equipment in order to be healthy and comfortable throughout the day. Your customers will appreciate an adjustable massage table because it will enable you to give them a great massage.
