If you look at the present state of the world economy, it's easy to see that there are too many variables creating a period of uncertainty and confusion amongst both consumers and entrepreneurs. The situation in Wall Street is of course totally different, as the financial services industry makes record profits. Main Street on the other hand, continues to suffer as corporate executives continue to rake in millions in income and bonuses.
Needless to say, this period of economic volatility is bad for your business. Consumers have grown wary of the times and are reining in their spending on products and services, which may include those that you offer. This of course, is putting tremendous pressure on small businesses such as yours, which is no wonder why many start-ups have failed in the last 2 to 3 years. Large companies are of course better equipped to handle this storm due to their cash reserves and consumer base, but what about your small business? What can you do?
Here are some tips to help you get through the crisis and bring stability to your small business.
Social Media Marketing and Social Networking
While many users on Facebook and Twitter use both sites for leisure and keeping in touch with friends, social networks are incredibly powerful platforms to market your business and reach out to your market. The best part is that these business tools can be utilized to their full potential without you having to spend large sums of cash, as is normally the case with offline advertising. With millions of people already on social media sites and social networks, it only makes sense to take advantage.
Ramp up Customer Service
The best defence against low consumer confidence is good customer service. Fortunately for you, most companies prefer to cut costs for customer service, thinking it saves them money in the long run. However, the process of acquiring new consumers is almost always more costly than keeping your existing ones. If people see that you're still dedicated to customer service, you can bet that they'll continue patronizing you.
Utilize Directories on the Web
Again, online directories are free for you to make use of. Those that do require payment have very minimal fees that are well worth it. Google Places for example, offers a free directory of businesses for every area an Internet user runs a search for.
Your economic compass may seem worthless due to these confusing times, but your business shouldn't succumb to market fluctuations. The economic crisis will eventually come to pass, but before that happens, play things smart by following the tips above.
