Governance, Risk Management and Compliance (or GRC) are normally seen as separate professions, but they are increasingly becoming integrated in business. This is in order to avoid conflicts and overlaps. While governance, risk management and compliance can all be defined quite differently by different institutions, GRC encompasses corporate governance, including adherence to relevant laws and regulations, corporate compliance and enterprise risk management. It's an approach that seems to be gaining popularity in business.

Anyone who works in GRC ensures that the senior executive team of a business or organisation are given critical management information in an accurate and timely fashion, with detail and insight, to allow ample time for decision making. Often this can lead to control mechanisms to be created and developed, in reaction to the information presented by the governance, risk management and compliance team.

Risk management typically concerns creating a set of processes through which executives can identify, analyse and respond to risks that could adversely affect the business and stifle its chances of meeting key objectives. The response given will depend utterly on the seriousness and specifics of the risk in question, but will usually involve controlling, avoiding, supressing, accepting or transferring the issue. There are many different types of risks which can have critical impact upon a business, including information security risks. Legal and regulatory compliance risks tend to be seen as the most crucial by many businesses, and this is why compliance and governance benefit from interaction.

Compliance is about conforming to regulations or adhering to requirements. Compliance issues are usually outlined by management, who can assess the risks and costs of non-compliance, helping them to prioritise, fund and implement responsive actions which are deemed necessary.

Governance, Risk and Compliance together form an integrated business approach. It may not be a great time to be looking for a job in finance, but this approach has created new types of roles. GRC professional are individuals with knowledge of all three disciplines, and these areas are said to benefit from being co-ordinated and working in harmony with one another.

Finance companies tend to have more regulatory issues than most businesses, thanks to governmental regulatory bodies. Due to economic conditions, it's easy to think that jobs in finance are few and far between, but in fact many financial companies have learnt from the last recession that cutting back on recruitment means creating a skills shortage in the future. Many of these recruiters are still looking for skilled new employees so they can continue to develop and improve their management processes.

Bill Weston writes on a number of subjects including compliance jobs, information security jobs and auditing jobs.
