How to Spend Wisely on a Remote Database Backup System
by
Christine Harrell
A remote database backup service provides those who use it with the ability to store and back up their computer files. It can be used at home, at school or at work. An online backup system is usually constructed around a software program that runs according to schedule, once daily, and typically during the night. As a rule, the backup service gathers, encrypts and sends the data to hardware located off-site on their own servers.
Making the Purchase
These can be bought at computer stores and set up for a home-based business. Finding the right program is important, and is therefore somewhat expensive. It ensures that important information is not lost. Using ecoupons at an office supply store is one way to save money on this necessary piece of equipment. Buying something through online deals at a computer or office supply etailer is another option. Any money spent should be looked upon as an investment in peace of mind, rather than an expense.
Choosing the Right Provider
A wide range of options are available, and they offer various service levels, types of encryption and feature sets. In addition, those who provide this kind of service often target key market segments. For example, a high-end LAN system may offer remote control, open file backups or an active directory.
Options
Here are some things to look for when choosing an online database backup service:
Data should always be encrypted with a minimum of 256 bits before it is transmitted to the provider, and it should also be stored in that state. Users should also be free to use their own encryption key, and that should not be forwarded to the service.
Network backup service is helpful for small businesses or multiple businesses run out of the same location. It includes backing up multiple servers, network attached storage appliances or computers on a local-area network from a single device or computer.
These services provide backup on a predetermined schedule, or continuously, with accompanying advantages and disadvantages. The latter method is generally preferred by large online retailers and financial institutions, but system resources and performance may be somewhat limited at times.
With file-by-file restore, users have the ability to restore files when they select them by name or folder without assistance from the provider. Some services also allow users to search for them by tags, backup set and file type.
For businesses, network traffic can be minimized by transferring only the binary data that has changed that day, and the more sophisticated internet backup services take this approach instead of transferring entire files daily.
Ideally, if network connection fails, the remote backup software will automatically perform backup on a local media device, such as another server, a disk or a tape drive. Once the network connection is restored, it will provide the off-site data center with the latest updates transmitted by the off-line backup media, thus ensuring that no information has been lost.
