Coaching For Effective Communication Within Small Business

A small business requires leadership skills. Leadership is about communication. Effective communication gives people the power to influence and inspire people. If you are in small business or a budding entrepreneur - you need to know how to give feedback in the most effective way possible.

Throughout our lives some of us may have heard this term used. As a business owner, manager or someone in a leadership role the 'Sandwich' approach should be the model used when working with staff members, team meetings and giving feedback. This is where the negative feedback or criticism is 'sandwiched' between two positive comments. This model is very basic; however it has the potential to make you an effective leader and therefore an effective business owner or entrepreneur. It will allow you to turn a difficult conversation that would almost certainly end in upset, tears or an argument into a constructive discussion with another team member.

We all know how good it feels to get praised for something. When a staff member at a small to medium business goes the extra mile but does not get acknowledged for it they may feel fed up or feel like there is no point of working harder if nobody notices. The same goes for people not working to their full potential. If it is not acknowledged, they being to believe that they can keep working this way and nobody will notice. If you need to have a conversation with an employee about something they need to improve on, it is important to make sure they do not feel attacked or victimized.

The sandwich approach begins with something positive they have done. Then the conversation about what they need to improve on should be in the middle. Be truthful about the issue however frame it in a way that makes it constructive criticism, rather then simply what they have done wrong. Reinforce that you believe that they can improve and that you believe in their abilities. During this discussion it is important to empathise and reflect on this person's feelings.

Make them aware that they will need to fix the issue and ensure it does not happen again, and if they need help with this, you are available. After this another comment about their positive attributes or the good work they have done in the past will reiterate that they are valued and support is there for them. This model can make staff more willing to work harder to improve, do the best they can whilst at work and feel happier about coming to work. This may also help reduce numbers of staff turnover, stress leave, burnout and other workplace wellness and corporate health issues.
