All business owners should take some time out of their busy lives to sit back, close their eyes, and imagine getting that phone call that all business owners fear. This is the phone call that says there has been an accident in their facility. It could be something very simple, such as an employee slipping down a wet staircase and breaking a bone or two. To the business owner, that simple fall is not so simple. It is the beginning of something incredibly complicated in most cases.
All business owners should take the time to imagine what happens after that phone call. There will be letters of demand for compensation, lawyer expenses, and days in court. Depending on the company and the type of accident that has occurred, there could even be some interest from local news media, or even national media. This is not a simple thing at all, and it is the reason so many business owners implement strict safety standards in their facilities. From safety courses to facility inspections, there are some things business owners can do to decrease their chances of getting that dreaded call.
Employee Safety Training Courses
Safety courses certified by nationally recognized safety organizations are the first place business owners turn to ensure all employees in their facilities know how to prevent and respond to accidents. These courses must be specifically related to the type of industry the business operates in, and employees need training on all equipment and machinery in their facilities as well.
Facility Inspections
Safety courses should be an ongoing project in all businesses, but facility inspections are do not need to be performed as frequently. These inspections involve having an independent professional come into facilities and look for all potential safety hazards. This is done not only in warehouses, construction and manufacturing facilities, but in offices as well. Employees can trip, slip and fall in any type of working environment and employers can be blamed.
Once the facilities are inspected, business owners should make sure every potential danger is fixed. Even if it is just a bit of carpeting sticking up, it is a lawsuit that could be avoided. It is a good idea for these inspections to be repeated yearly or even more frequently as things can change in a working environment at any time.
Equipment Testing and Maintenance
This is a business protection that should be as routine as holding employee safety courses. Equipment and heavy machinery should not be operated until something goes wrong. Rather, it should be tested, inspected and searched over for potential problems before they actually become problems. Not only does this extend the life of the machinery and save money for the company, but it ensures proper functioning so employees around the equipment do not get injured.
It is never pleasant for a business owner to think about what could happen in the case of an accident in their work facilities, but it is something every owner should spend some time thinking about. The more they do to prevent accidents, the less chance they have of suffering the consequences of accidents. Safety courses are now standard, but most businesses should go even further than that.
