What Is An Online Payment Service And Why Would I Want One

by Jeffery Nevil

Right, so what is an online payment service. Well it's basically a way to pay people online. Seems obvious, but it needs a bit more explanation I suppose. There are a lot of options to choose from out there nowadays, but they do vary and some work a little differently to others. Well, let's get down to business and I will tell you how they work and why you might find them useful.

Well they function quite simply really, you might be a bit scared. The words money and online together tend to get people a bit riled up. But just chill out, it's pretty simple. The usual way in which they work is that you open an online payment account with the site. This is sort of like a membership, and you get an account with them - all you really need to create one is an email address. If you want to send some money, then you transfer money from your bank into this account. This is then ready for you to send out to whoever you want.

You might be a bit sketchy here. Woah, wait a second. You said it was safe, and all of a sudden I'm giving my bank details out. Just calm down, it's true that you are giving your details to the company, but that's only a standard transaction to transfer money into your account. Reputable companies can be trusted with this sort of transaction, they will never ask for your credit card security numbers or anything but your sort code and account number will be needed. This is the same info on any standard cheque you write. And after that, the bank is out of the equation. I hope that allays some your fears.

So, you've got an account and you've put money into it but then what do you do. Well, it can be very useful. Let's say you've gone out for a meal with friends and you forgot your wallet. They're cool, of course they are - they're your friends, and cover your share but you say you're going to repay them in no time. Well, you could go straight home and start a transfer to your friends straight away, you could call them up and get all their account details and input them into your online banking system before sending the money off. That's great, but it's a lot of work and you will almost always have to wait quite a long time, especially if the bank you're sending to is not the same one that you're sending from. On top of that, you've probably all shared a bottle of wine - so when you get home you don't want to sit at your computer working on your finances.

A much better idea is getting yourself one of these online accounts and sending the money the next morning, instantly. On top of that, you don't need to call around for your friends account numbers and sort codes. You just need their email addresses. You might need to send money in an emergency, say your brother calls you saying he's drunk and needs money for a cab, just send the money and he can get home safe.

It's also a good idea for businesses, if you've got payroll to get out there then this is an easy way to do it. It's a lot easier to deal in different currencies with this system too, so if you're paying people abroad it's a good option.

So there you have it folks. I hope you now know what an online payment service is, how they work and why you might want one. There are so many options, so have a look around and find the right one with the right features for you.
