How To Hire A Contractor

If you decide to hire a contractor, find one you know or who has done a similar job well for a neighbor or a friend. Otherwise, spend a little more time and check the Yellow Pages, search them in the Better Business Bureau, or ask in the local lumber yards and at home center for someone they can recommend.
Contractors are licensed in most states, so you can check with the state contractors' licensing board about complaints. Other place you can check the company's reputation and complaints is in the Better Business Bureau, check to see if there are any complaints and once the job is completed, leave your feedback for future customers, remember that there are other people looking for a contractor and they will appreciate your honest opinion. If the state requires a license, the license number should be included in the contract. The contractor should be bonded, too, to ensure that all the work is completed satisfactory. Ask for and check a list for similar jobs preformed.
Get the names of several professionals and ask them to bid in your job. Make sure you get at least 3 bids. Do not choose the expensive or the inexpensive but the one between. Your bid request should spell what work is to be done, who pays for the building permit, if any, what material should be included, and weather disposal is required.
Depending on the area where you leave, there could be some negotiating in the price. Is important that you choose a company that has a great stability and background because you will want them around in case something happens, you should be cover by a warranty. If your house damage is cover by the insurance, a stable contractor should be able to complete the job without putting any pressure on you for payment. An insurance claim will take a longer process. Most contractors will deal directly with the insurance company, releasing you from the hassle of dealing with them.
Do not accept any bids base only personal passport, experience, reference and recommendations, schedule, cost. After the biding closes it is consider to be unethical to negotiate simultaneously with two contractors to bid. After you accept a bid, notify all bidders of the winning price.
